How to Prepare for your First Backpacking Travel Trip Abroad

How to Prepare for your First Backpacking Travel Trip Abroad

  1. Research Destinations
  2. Plan Locations and Budget
  3. Invest in Travel Necessities
  4. Pack Efficiently

The prospect of your first backpacking adventure may stir up a cocktail of excitement, nerves, and a hint of trepidation. The unknown can be daunting, and as a new traveler, fears of the unfamiliar might linger. Yet, take a moment to consider this: beyond the uncertainties lies a world of discovery, personal growth, and a myriad of unforgettable experiences. Deciding to embark on your first backpacking trip is not just a travel choice; it's a decision to embrace a lifestyle filled with curiosity, resilience, and the courage to step beyond your comfort zone.

The Fearful Beginning: Embracing the Journey Ahead

It's normal for a new traveler to grapple with apprehensions – the fear of the unknown, concerns about safety, or even worries about not having everything perfectly planned. However, let me assure you, this decision marks the commencement of a transformative chapter in your life. The benefits of travel extend far beyond the destination itself. It's about learning, adapting, and connecting with cultures beyond your own. So, let's cast aside those initial qualms and dive into the exciting realm of backpacking travel preparation. So here are the four things you need to do to get ready for your first backpacking trip.

1. Research: Illuminating the Path Ahead

Research is the compass guiding your journey. Devote time to understanding the destinations you plan to visit – any potential travel visas you may need, dangerous areas you should avoid, and average cost of living for backpackers, in addition to the countries' customs, culture and the experiences they offer. Delve into travel blogs, forums, and guidebooks, and even social media: Youtube and Tik Tok. Uncover hidden gems, local favorites, and essential tips from seasoned travelers. This knowledge forms the foundation of a well-rounded and enriching adventure.

2. Plan: Crafting Your Itinerary

With insights from your research, craft a flexible itinerary that allows for spontaneity. Identify must-see attractions, but leave room for serendipitous discoveries. Consider your budget, the best times to visit each destination, and modes of transportation. Start putting money aside and figuring out total costs of your trip: Planes to and from + Daily Costs (hospitality, food, fun, etc.) + Emergency Fund = Total Cost. A well-thought-out plan ensures a balance between structured exploration and the freedom to go where the journey takes you.

3. Invest in Backpacking Items: Equipping for the Road Ahead

Investing in the right gear is crucial. Start with a durable, well-fitted, large backpack, and equip it with essentials like packing cubes to maximize your bag organization, sturdy locks for your backpack and hostel/hotel lockers, and a comprehensive bathroom kit: toiletry bag to easily transport bathroom products, microfiber towel for a compacting and fast drying companion, and shower sandals to keep those feet clean in bathrooms and showers. Don't forget a compact first aid kit – a travel companion for unforeseen bumps along the road. There are many items that could really benefit your experience - check them out here: Travel Products.

4. Pack: The Art of Efficient Packing

Packing is both an art and a science. First, and most obvious, is tailor your packing list to the climate of your destinations. Regardless of the temperatures, pack more shirts, socks, and underwear than pants, shorts, and sweatshirts because shirts, socks, and underwear get sweatier and smellier much quicker. Only include a single sweatshirt or two, and two pairs of shoes – one for walking and one for more formal occasions - as well as a pair of flip flops/sandals. Remember: packing less is the way to go. You don't want to be carrying around so much weight all the time and you can easily re-wear clothes or wash them in a sink.

After these four crucial preparation steps, you should be prepared to embark on your first backpacking trip. With your fears eased and preparations in motion, you're on the brink of a life-altering journey. The world awaits, ready to unfold its wonders as you take your first steps into the realm of backpacking travel. Pack your curiosity, open-mindedness, and a spirit of adventure, for these will be your most valuable companions on this transformative odyssey. Happy travels! 🌍✈️

Great to see you have a similar vision to help others get the travel bug and explore the world.
I have just launched an award winning hanging backpack, designed for travellers like yourself, going hostel to hostel, city to city, adventure to adventure. Instead of having to unpack, trying to find things in your backpack or cubes, then having to repack every time you move, there is an alterative.
Hang up, unzip and go. Be curious to hear how much time and hassle you would save. Probably unlikely but if you are in the UK at the moment, I may be even able to let you review one. Look forward to catching up and keep up the great blog. Thanks Jack
