How to Optimize Backpack Space for Travel | Backpacking 101
#1. Use Packing Cubes
Packing cubes are a great travel asset that allow backpackers to optimize their bag space and organization. Coming in different sizes, packing cubes are just little bags that you put clothing and other travel items into. They allow travelers to easily located things in their bag without destroying organization while also opening up space for other items. Check out our packing cubes here: 6-Piece Packing Cubes.
#2. Roll Clothing
Instead of folding your clothes in your bag or packing cubes, you should roll them. Rolled clothes have a slightly smaller volume size versus folded clothes. This will open up only slightly more bag space, so if you are desperate, this is a good thing to try.
#3. Optimize Bag Pockets
A pro tip is to use every pocket in your backpack. If you are not using a pocket, you are not taking advantage of the space your backpack has to offer. From personal experience, I was not using the tiny pockets located around the waste strap of my big backpack for months of travel. When I decided to put my universal adaptor and chargers in them, I freed up a ton of space. Take advantage of the little pockets and you will see more space open up.
#4. Buy Carabiners
Carabiners are perfect for hanging things on the side of your backpack. From shoes to sandals to hats, carabiners have the potential to free up so much space in your bag allowing you to bring more items with you on your journey. Check out our carabiners here: Aluminum Carabiners.
#5. Bring Another Small Bag
Although it seems most convenient to make everything fit into a single backpack, sometimes you just can’t. So bring another small hand bag to carry. Whether it is a large purse or a stringed backpack, you will be able to bring so many more things than your single travel bag can hold. It will take more weight off your back, and in general, having to hold a small bag in your hand isn’t too much of a hassle.
#6. Bring Less!
Chances are you packed too much. I know it might seem like there’s absolutely nothing more you can get rid of, but trust me, you can always leave more behind. The less you bring, the lighter your bag will be, and the happier you’ll be.
